| Supetar is the
largest town on Brac and the administrative and cultural centre
of the island. The town grew up around the peninsula of St.
Nikola, the patron saint of fishermen and sailors. After a
period of obscurity during the Middle Ages the town returned
to prominence at the end of the 18th century and developed
into the settlement that exists today. Supetar’s tranquil
beauty and proximity to Split has made it a popular place
for holiday homes with those on the mainland and you will
find many ‘vikendice’ (weekend houses) around
the centre. These villas are hidden amongst the bougainvillea
and palm trees and have been carefully designed to preserve
the character of the area.
Its status as the island’s capital gives the town a
year-round vibrancy and you will find everything you need
here to enjoy your holiday. During the season the coastal
road is pedestrianised allowing restaurants and cafes to spill
out onto the harbour front. There are many beaches within
the town and a full range of activities from tennis, football
and basketball to sailing and waterskiing. We recommend the
beautiful beach of Vela Luka which is suitable for children
and popular with players of the traditional Dalmatian game
of ‘Picigin’.
At night time you will find the action concentrated around
the centre and in the late-night bars and discos hidden in
the woods behind the seafront.
