| Sumartin, originally
called St. Martin, is the easternmost and youngest settlement
on Brac. Set on the South-facing slopes of a large bay, it
is populated by beautiful stone houses interconnected via
narrow cobbled streets. The 18th century Franciscan monastery
at the centre, hidden behind its gardens of palm and green
oleander, lends the town a serene and peaceful atmosphere.
Tourism was always one of the staple industries in Sumartin
but the town has been overlooked in recent years in favour
of the more accessible parts of the island. It is awakening
slowly as more adventurous newcomers discover its wild beauty.
The hamlet of Puntinak, across the bay from the main town,
is particularly attractive with many fine examples of Brac
stone houses along its shores. The harbour has many cafes
and restaurants to relax in while the pine-tree lined beaches
and inlets around the town provide plenty of places to explore.
Summer nights are very lively in the town with plenty to see
in this traditional Dalmatian setting.
For those looking to invest in the future there are some additional
factors to consider. The island’s first golf course
is planned behind the town and a new motorway link from Zagreb
to Makarska will improve access by ferry.
