| The quiet village of Splitska
offers the perfect destination for holidaygoers looking to get away from the
rigours of city life. Spread around the two bays of Zastup and Splitskarska
the surrounding area offers numerous pine tree-lined coves in which to relax by the sea.
The village has its origins in medieval times when it was
used to transport Brac stone to the mainland. However the
frequent attacks by pirates from Omis forced the inhabitants
to take refuge in the inland fortress at Skrip. It wasn’t
until the 16th century that the erection of a fortress on
the waterfront afforded enough protection to allow the inhabitants
to settle permanently. This fortress still stands today next
to the church of St. Maria and it forms the focal point of
the village.
During the day the old Splitska – Postira road provides the perfect setting for a
long walk or bike ride. On the way you will find the little bay of Gabova where
you can take a break from the afternoon sun and enjoy a swim. There are plenty
of quiet venues for an afternoon drink or for an evening meal down by the harbour
and for a more lively nightlife you will find many late-night restaurants and discos
in the neighbouring towns of Postira (2.5km) and Supetar (5km).
