| Dominating the
North East coast of Brac is the vibrant town of Pucisca. More
than any other of the island’s towns Pucisca’s
prominence was built on the stone industry. For centuries
the craftsmanship of its stone masons was prized in Western
Europe and stone from its quarries was used in the construction
of buildings the world over. In recent years the town has
begun to focus on the more modern industry of tourism but
the skill of its artisans is still evident in the hand-carved
sculptures that adorn its buildings.
The town was founded at the foot of a deep bay from where
it grew out along the coast. The largest houses, belonging
to the nobles, were constructed on the shoreline and the more
compact peasants’ houses took their places on the hills
above.
Today visitors can enjoy the intimate character of this old
town via a stroll through its winding streets or over a coffee
in its many cafes and restaurants. The beach at the end of
the bay is very popular with many watersports on offer including
sailing and some of the island’s best diving. During
the evenings Pucisca has something for every generation, from
quiet restaurants by the ocean to disco bars with dancing
until dawn.
