| Hidden away amongst
the numerous coves and harbours of the island’s North
East coast is the charming village of Povlja. The indented
shoreline provides a picture perfect setting for the village
and it is to the shelter of the surrounding bays that the
settlement owes its roots.
In addition to its surroundings the village is famed for its
architecture and in particular for the prevalence of stone
tiles that cover the roofs of its houses. In the past this
was the traditional way to protect houses from the elements
but in recent years other towns have replaced them in favour
of terracotta tiles.
In 2003 Povlja won the award for the best tourist village
in Dalmatia in recognition of its diversity. Modern services
and entertainment blend seamlessly with traditional culture
and architecture making the town an ideal setting in which
to spend a holiday away from the clamour of Western Europe.
Whatever you want, whether it be to unwind in a sleepy café,
walk by the sea or sample the delights of real Dalmatian cooking
you will be glad you made time for Povlja.
